nemu*nemu incorporates local vocabulary in innovative ways.  One of the stuffed dogs is deathly afraid of water which he calls “botcha.” “Botcha” is the local term for the Japanese word for “bath time.” In the story, the Botcha Duck educates the dog on the benefits of a long soak in a tub.  While Hawai‘i-based jargon may be incomprehensible to foreign audiences, nemu*nemu presents local practices (and in-jokes) to non-Hawai‘i readers that allows them to enjoy the quirkiness of the story and characters.
