A subplot in Cacy & Kiara features a relationship between the volcano goddess Pele and her sister of the forest, Hi‘iaka, who both aid Cacy and Kiara in their journey. As in stories from other cultures, both goddesses are portrayed like humans with jealousies and short tempers. In Chang’s story Cacy and Kiara, who at first despise each other, learn to work together as they learn of the symbiotic relationship between the two goddesses.
The first piece on the left introduces Hi‘iaka, who finds the girls passed out on the forest floor. Her sister Pele is portrayed in the second piece from the right.
