Figure 20: Character Studies

When planning a manga, it is common for artists to create character sheets to explore the design, scale and ideas behind their characters. Drawing from several historical sources, Torigoe created characters that link the present with the past.  By studying images of people from historical photographs, she combined different characteristics to design a cast of characters.  The large shark depicted here was created in a similar way. Its design was based on scientific images and photographs of the Galapagos shark found in Hawaiian waters.
