“Doujinshi,” or self-published manga, often use the settings and characters of established series to create new, unofficial storylines. The doujinshi Define by Hawai‘i artist Kyunyo (b. 1994) reinterprets the manga series Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic by Shinobu Ohtaka in her own narrative and artistic style. Define explores the back-story of a character from the original manga, filling in and expanding upon what Ohtaka chose to leave hidden. Doujinshi serves as an entry point into professional publishing for many young artists. Through this format they develop a personal voice while finding inspiration from the work of their favorite manga artist(s).
Kyunyo, preferring to go by a penname, is an ardent follower of current Japanese manga culture, which her work reflects. She represents a younger generation eager to create manga influenced by international trends.
